Description: What an amazingly cumbersome and slow crab. Fanatical about hanging on and fiercly resistant to handling. Ever present here at the lower shoreline under stones. Lovely camouflage. Picture three shows that many here have a very enlarged left claw, though this one may be the result of a physical incident.

Description: On 4th May I walked through the woods under Froggatt Edge, Derbyshire. Many birch trees had been cut, in order, I believe, to encourage the regeneration of oaks. One pair of large stumps, - the largest had a diameter of about 12 inches / 30cm - were covered in a creamy substance, mostly white, but with orange and yellow areas, that appeared to be emerging from the top of the stump and running down the sides. I have seen a lot of felled trees, but never anything like this. I guess it is the reaction of a fungus to the timber being cut, but maybe it is something else ???

Description: A hazel near Curbar, Derbyshire. The branches end in a few normal hazel leaves and a bunch of what are to me at least, atypical, leaves. Is this caused by a parasite or fungal infection or just a variation on normal? I wonder if something interesting will develop later in the year?

Description: Adjacent to a shallow pond. Female, I think newly emerged. Common blue can be ruled out on the basis of the thorax markings, particularly the antehumeral stripe. In 5 years of photographing damselflies here I have never found Variable and it is not known at this site. Southern can be discounted on grounds of habitat and location makes any of the other possible confusion species extremely unlikely if not impossible.
