Badger droppings
(Added to iSpot on 23rd October 2011)
Several groups of droppings within a small area all containing some sort of nut or bulb. One photo shows the droppings in a pit, possibly a latrine. Pungent smell. The pit was seen on the edge of a rarely used path around the edge of unkempt field with large grasses and brambles.
Location: Blackfield Ln, Great Missenden

Badger
At this time of the year badgers eat a lot of nuts and berries leaving these sloppy, dark droppings. The position you describe sounds right as does some of them being in shallow latrines. Badgers use these regular piles of droppings to mark the edge of their territory.
