I remember now - this was indeed a "cèpe" (more fully a cèpe de Bordeaux), the only one I found during our great mushroom hunt, while my French friend found them all over the place. The woods were full with people intent on finding tasty fungi. In the end the cèpes that we gathered were very yummy indeed, aided naturally by the nice bottle of French wine that accompanied them.
