Notes: Basically a nightmare! Despite the statement on a well-known web site, the palps are not seen as a valid id feature. The copper colour on the underwing of both species extends along the full length of the wing, but the key feature is the degree to which the colour extends away from the trailing edge. Unfortunately this cannot be seen on a closed wing and the moth needs to be anaesthetised and then the wing can be carefully opened. It is perhaps a good strategy to use the zig zags on the upperside of the wings as an initial pointer and then look in detail at any likely suspects.
