Identifications
Oak Eggar/ Northern Eggar (
Lasiocampa quercus/ L. quercus f. callunae
)
by nightfly
at 10:39 pm 13/10/12
Confidence:
I'm as sure as I can be.
Notes:
2cm juvenile Lasiocampa quercus feeding on heather, 4 recorded today, no large ones seen. They might be in pupation?
likely ID
Northern Eggar (
Lasiocampa quercus form callunae
)
by nightfly
at 11:27 pm 13/10/12
Confidence:
I'm as sure as I can be.
Notes:
This larva is completely identical to the 21mm form callunae larvae in ukleps, the Oak Eggar early instars like this are quite different in ukleps and have no sign of blue on them. I think the consensus is that the L. quercus this far north in Ireland are the form 'callunae'. The habitat is also correct, upland blanket bog.
