likely ID
Oak Eggar/ Northern Eggar (
Lasiocampa quercus/ L. quercus f. callunae
)
by nightfly
at 11:16 pm 13/10/12
Confidence:
I'm as sure as I can be.
Notes:
The very distinctive cocoon of the Northern Eggar or Oak Eggar. This one is intact and was lying out on the top of the ground on moorland, I think they are supposed to pupate in the ground. I dont really know if this is alive or if it has been parasitised but nothing has come out of it yet, moth or parasite. Several other spent cocoons were also found, some containing moth exuviae and others containing spent parasitic fly cocoons.
