Fly larva cases

Thousands of discarded larva cases washed ashore after a big hatch of flies. Remnants of a few flies can be seen amongst the cases.
Location: A708, Scottish Borders

Cannot help with the ID, but it should be spelt with two 'o's as above, I think.

Thanks for pointing this out Ophrys, I thought I had just about got away with the typo in the common name, but no!

Chironomids
there is a dead adult chironomid in the picture, the white thing just above the piece of grass near the centre.

Woops- should say Midges, not mides. It would be more accurate to say 'larval exuviae' I think where I've said nymphal exuviae.
