Bottlenose

I have no idea, based on this picture...but if it is Bottle-nosed Dolphin, the scientific name should be...Tursiops truncatus.

Possible BND

I tried downloading the photo but couldn't enlarge it enough to get a good look. Bottlenose seems very likey from the size showing at this distance. Can be quite splashy and jump out of the water, but you also get a slow swim where the dark backs just roll up and show the tall curved fin.

Risso's is a possibility, but they tend to be earlier in the year and the groups would be small. Risso's can seem like Jaws: taller fin, whitish scratched body in older males, blunt nose rather than a bottle, with an almost slow motion roll.

Bottlenose would be a good bet if the behaviour or shape is consistent - can you remember?

Possible BND

The display they put on was fantastic leaping and twisting while gulls circled above, they are what drew my attention. they went from one end of sandy bay to the other and then returned. Got a better camera now, I always walk the cliff on my way into work keeping my eyes peeled. the seals are having a field day with the salmon and sea trout that are showing in the bay at the moment

Sounds like BND alright.

Sounds like BND alright. Will be interesting to see if they visit this spot regularly. In Co. down it is pretty frustrating as they just move through very quickly and return unpredictably.

Bottle nose dolphin

Even though the animal is far away you can see the shape of the dorsal fin clearly. Definitely bottle-nosed dolphin.
