I did wonder about it being a

I did wonder about it being a slime mould. There were spores under the papery white covering.

Slime moulds have a

Slime moulds have a fascinating biology. In some of them the individual cells move around independently when feeding on bacteria and then coalesce to form a fruiting body to reproduce.
They are in fact not moulds (fungi) and include several unrelated groups. See the entry in Wikipedia

are you sure it was a fungus not a slime mould starting to turn from its porridge state, did you feel it and find out how hard it was?
