Description: Two basking sharks pair-swimming from a group of >40 sharks observed on a very calm day about 10-12 miles off Newquay. This behaviour and tail-following, as well as breaching, was observed over a 2-3 hour period. It was from this shoal that reports of shark birth was reported. Sadly, this was not the case; rather, sea lampreys were attached around the cloacal region giving the impression of shark birth. The underwater photo of the basking shark is courtesy of Jamie Strike, a colleague of mine at Cornwall College Newquay.
I have added the lamprey attached shots to this entry.
