Description: I think this may be a male Monarch butterfly as it had the two spots on it's hindwings that give off pheremones.

Description: I was harbouring a secretly held ambition when we went walking in Madeira last week, that I would see a Monarch/Milkweed for the first time. And lo, ambition achieved. These fabulous creatures were floating about a small garden in the centre of Funchal.
Most things on Madeira seem to have some sort of name confusion, though. Since Monarch is much nicer than Milkweed (IMHO), I'm going with that. This one's a male 'cos it has the sex brand on its hind wings.
